Just the word ring brings a smile to a woman’s face and brings about the thoughts of romances. Different from every other piece of jewelry, like necklaces, bracelets, or earrings, a ring has significance and sentimental value.
Being a woman, I know that when I hear the word ring I always think of an engagement ring/wedding ring. But I also know that throughout history rings have signified very important things. Sometimes rings or a sign of authority, sometimes a sign of status other times they are used to seal a pack or to signify something of importance. Often times, rings have been worn in memory of a loved one or to represent a promise. In Ancient times rings were able to heal or even tell the future. Diamonds weren’t always a woman’s best friend…throughout the centuries, rings have been adorned with ever gemstone we have been able to find.
Rulers in the past have had what is called a signet ring. This would allow you to stamp your seal of approval on something. Kings used these to enforce new laws or to pass down their power. These are equivalent to someone’s signature today and it was a great offence to steal someone’s ring. Rings have always been a part of religion. In Rome, high priests wore rings and even today the pope wears a ring. The Hindus even wore grass rings at religious ceremonies. Today in Christianity there are many people who wear either a “true love waits” rings or a purity ring. You can find rings with Christian symbols like the fish or a cross.
Today the most exciting type of ring for a woman is her engagement ring. I know that I have looked forward to the day that I can wear a diamond engagement ring, since I was little. It represents an undying love and a commitment for the rest of your life. The Romans and the Egyptians used to have wedding rings made from iron or brass. The Anglo-Saxons wore a lover’s knot ring. Whatever the case, wedding and engagement rings have been all throughout history representing a commitment between a man and a woman.
For teens a ring that they look forward to getting these days is their class ring. For them it represents them growing up. They finished high school and are moving off to college, which is a big change and the next big chapter in their lives. These rings bring back lots of memories and are something that a lot of adults keep for the rest of their lives. Some gown adults in their 60s even wear their high school or college class ring.
